But when I saw Need for Speed Underground from Criterion Games on sale at my local UK retailer for £25, I had to check out what all the fuss was about. Need For Speed Underground is a rare breed of racing game - one that's heavy on realism and car customisation without being overtly sports simulation-y. I was sceptical when I first saw it in the shops, but when I started playing it I realised it had taken the best of both worlds. The game comes with an entertaining story mode that sees you rise up through the ranks of street racing, snatching away rival houses' territory with your skills behind the wheel. You start off in a car that's about as useful to you as a fly swatter to a fish (i.e., worthless) and after some races get your hands on some money which enables you to get new cars and get yourself quicker. The games' difficulty level starts off low but quickly ramps up - eventually making even the easiest races hard work if you don't know what you're doing. The graphics are decent without being amazing, but I didn't buy it for the visuals anyway. The cars are beautifully detailed, the weather conditions are nicely done and even though there's no dedicated multiplayer mode, there's still enough on offer to make this an enjoyable game. The only real disappointment is the car customisation that seems to stop after some point.
